FN FAL được thiết kế tại Bỉ và có biệt danh là 'cánh tay phải của Thế giới Tự do' vì hàng chục quốc gia đã sử dụng nó trong Chiến tranh Lạnh. Qatar đã trang bị loại súng này cho lực lượng mặt đất khi quốc gia này thành lập quân đội sau năm 1971.
Các binh sĩ Qatar đã mang theo loại vũ khí mạnh mẽ này trong các đợt huấn luyện và trên chiến tuyến của Chiến tranh vùng Vịnh. Cấu tạo chắc chắn của súng cho phép nó hoạt động ổn định ngay cả trong điều kiện bụi sa mạc và thời tiết nóng bức khắc nghiệt.
