Kuwait đã mua xe tăng Chieftain do Anh sản xuất trong thời kỳ Chiến tranh Lạnh vào những năm 1970. Chieftain nổi tiếng vì có lớp giáp trước dày và khẩu pháo chính rất mạnh mẽ. Các đơn vị xe tăng Kuwait đã huấn luyện với chúng trong nhiều năm để bảo vệ quốc gia nhỏ bé này trước các mối đe dọa trong khu vực.
Khi Iraq xâm lược Kuwait vào ngày 2 tháng 8 năm 1990, binh lính Kuwait đã sử dụng những chiếc Chieftain của họ trong các cuộc đụng độ dữ dội, bao gồm cả Trận chiến những cây cầu. Các kíp xe Kuwait đã chiến đấu dũng cảm trước số lượng xe tăng địch lớn hơn rất nhiều. Những kíp xe Kuwait sống sót sau đó đã tham gia trở lại cuộc chiến. Cùng với lực lượng liên quân quốc tế, quân đội Kuwait đã giúp đánh đuổi lực lượng Iraq trong Chiến dịch Bão táp Sa mạc vào năm 1991.
