ประวัติ
เหรียญ Distinguished Service Cross ถูกสร้างขึ้นในปี 1918 ในช่วงสงครามโลกครั้งที่ 1 เพื่อยกย่องทหารที่แสดงความกล้าหาญอย่างยิ่งในการรบ แต่การกระทำนั้นยังไม่ถึงเกณฑ์ที่จะได้รับเหรียญ Medal of Honor เหรียญนี้เป็นรูปกางเขนสีบรอนซ์ที่มีรูปนกอินทรีอยู่ตรงกลางและล้อมรอบด้วยช่อใบรอเรล รางวัลนี้จะมอบให้กับทหารในกองทัพบกของ United States เท่านั้น โดยกองทัพเรือและนาวิกโยธินจะมีเหรียญของตนเองที่เรียกว่า Navy Cross ส่วนกองทัพอากาศจะมีเหรียญ Air Force Cross ทหารหลายพันนายได้รับเหรียญ Distinguished Service Cross ตลอดช่วงสงครามโลกครั้งที่ 1 สงครามโลกครั้งที่ 2 สงครามเกาหลี สงครามเวียดนาม และความขัดแย้งอื่นๆ ในเวลาต่อมา
