Michael Vicelleo

Michael Vicelleo joined the United States Army to serve his country during a time of intense conflict. He underwent rigorous flight training to learn how to operate complex helicopters under extreme pressure. After earning his wings, he was deployed to South Vietnam to support ground troops.

In late 1968, the 1st Infantry Division was engaged in heavy operations around the Di An base area. Pilots were tasked with scouting the thick jungle to ensure that infantry patrols were not walking into ambushes. Vicelleo prepared his helicopter for another routine but high-risk mission over the contested territory.

Captain Vicelleo returned to his base to refuel and perform maintenance on his aircraft. He knew that the next flight would bring the same life-threatening risks as the one he just completed.

After his service in Vietnam, Vicelleo continued his military career for several years. He brought the valuable lessons he learned as a scout pilot to future training programs for new aviators. His dedication to the army and his fellow soldiers remained a central part of his life long after his final flight in Vietnam.
