歴史

The Argentine Navy, or Armada de la República Argentina, was founded in the 1810s as Argentina became an independent nation. It grew into one of the strongest navies in South America. In 1951, Argentina bought the American cruiser USS Phoenix, a survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor, and renamed it ARA General Belgrano. In 1982, the navy helped lead the takeover of the Falkland Islands. On 2 May 1982, the British submarine HMS Conqueror torpedoed the General Belgrano, and 323 sailors died. It was the deadliest single event of the war. After that loss, Argentina's main warships stayed in port for the rest of the war. The navy's submarine San Luis did sail against the British fleet, but its torpedoes missed. Today the Argentine Navy still guards the country's long Atlantic coast.
