それ以前の中国の装甲車両はソ連製をそのままコピーしたものでしたが、Type 63は1950年代後半から1960年代にかけて中国独自で開発されました。軍は、荒れた地面を走り、川を泳いで渡ることができる軽量の装甲輸送車を求めていたのです。
この車両は、前線に向かう兵士たちを銃弾や砲弾の破片から守りました。歩兵部隊全員を乗せることができ、屋根には防御用の重機関銃が装備されていました。ベトナム戦争中、中国は沼地やジャングルが多いデルタ地帯で戦う北ベトナム軍を支援するため、多数のType 63を送りました。この車両は冷戦が終わるまで使われ続けました。
