西ドイツは冷戦時代、バルト海の浅く狭い海域で作戦を行うためにType 206を建造しました。海軍は、敵の軍艦を待ち伏せしたり、気づかれることなく機雷を敷設したりできる、小型でステルス性の高い潜水艦を必要としていました。
船体には特殊な非磁性鋼が使われていたため、磁気探知装置や水中機雷に見つかりにくくなっていました。非常に静かな電気モーターで動くType 206は、静かに沿岸をパトロールし、西ドイツにとって欠かせない海上の守護神となりました。
