PT-76は、川や沼、湖を簡単に移動できるようにソビエト連邦によって設計されました。東南アジアで戦闘が広がると、ソビエトの貨物機や北ベトナムの同盟軍が、この泳ぐ戦車をラオス軍に送りました。
ラオスにはメコン川のような大きな水路や沼地の多い谷があるため、通常の重戦車は移動に苦労していました。PT-76は特殊なウォータージェットを使って橋なしで川を渡り、敵の拠点を驚かせました。
