歴史
1950年6月に朝鮮戦争が勃発した際、韓国には戦闘機が1機もありませんでした。少人数のパイロットがすぐに日本へ飛び、アメリカのF-51D Mustangでの訓練を短期間で終えると、10機の機体を持ち帰り、数日以内に自国の飛行場を防衛しました。この歴史的な任務が、韓国空軍の戦闘部隊としての誕生となりました。
Mustangは、朝鮮半島全域での低空からの近接航空支援任務に適していました。パイロットたちは爆弾を投下し、ロケット弾を発射し、地上目標を攻撃することで進撃してくる歩兵部隊を食い止めました。韓国は朝鮮戦争を通じて100機以上のMustangを運用し、ジェット戦闘機に取って代わられるまで、冷戦初期を通じて運用を続けました。
