韓国は朝鮮戦争の開戦時、敵の機甲部隊に対抗できる中戦車を1両も持っていませんでした。これを支援するため、アメリカは「イージーエイト」の愛称で知られるM4A3E8 Shermanを供給しました。このモデルは、改良されたサスペンションと、悪路でも敵の車両を破壊できる強力な76mm砲を備えていました。
韓国の機甲部隊はM4A3E8 Shermanを使って訓練を行い、険しい山岳地帯で友軍の歩兵を支援しました。この戦車は休戦後も1950年代の冷戦初期を通じて韓国陸軍の主力として活躍し、より重い戦車と交代するまで長らく運用されました。
