第一次世界大戦の膠着した戦いの中では、すべての兵士が素早く身を守るための穴を掘る道具を必要としていました。オーストリア＝ハンガリー帝国やその他のヨーロッパの軍隊では、歩兵全員の標準装備として小型の塹壕用シャベルを支給しました。
この道具は兵士のベルトや背嚢（はいのう）に取り付けられ、いつでもすぐに使えるようになっていました。兵士たちはこれを使ってシェルスクレイプ（即席の避難穴）を掘ったり、水が溜まった塹壕の排水をしたりしたほか、時には恐ろしい接近戦の武器としても使いました。
これらの頑丈な塹壕用ツールは、二つの世界大戦を通じて歩兵の標準装備であり続けました。その多くは冷戦時代に入ってからも、予備役部隊によって保管・使用されていました。
