Ilyushin Il-2 Shturmovikは、低空から敵の車両や兵士を攻撃するために特別に作られました。設計者は、操縦席、エンジン、燃料タンクの周りを直接覆う頑丈な鋼鉄製の殻を取り付けました。この厚い金属製の浴槽のような装甲が、地上からの射撃や砲弾の破片から乗組員を守りました。ソ連の工場では第二次世界大戦中に36,000機以上のShturmovikが製造され、史上最も多く生産された軍用機の設計となりました。Il-2は前線の敵の戦車や列車、補給部隊を破壊したため、戦争遂行において不可欠な存在だと考えられていました。
