Flakpanzer Gepardは、西ドイツの装甲部隊を低空飛行するジェット機や攻撃ヘリコプターから守るために開発されました。西ドイツの技術者たちは、Leopard 1戦車の頑丈な車体に、レーダーを備えた高性能な装甲砲塔を組み合わせました。
Gepardは、砲塔の両側に2門の速射式35-millimeter機関砲を装備していました。そのレーダーは悪天候や夜の暗闇の中でも攻撃してくる飛行機を追跡し、自動的に照準を合わせることができました。この車両は冷戦中から21世紀にかけて、Bundeswehrで忠実に任務を遂行しました。
