歴史
B-52 Stratofortressは、冷戦初期にアメリカの究極の空中抑止力として設計されました。アメリカ空軍は、北米から離陸し、海を越えて核兵器を投下し、無事に帰還できる巨大な飛行機を求めていました。
この飛行機は1952年に初飛行を行い、1955年に本格的な軍事運用が開始されました。巨大な後退翼の下にペアで取り付けられた8基のジェットエンジンを搭載しています。その巨大なサイズから、航空隊員はこの巨機を「BUFF」という愛称で呼んでいました。
ベトナム戦争中、B-52は数千回もの絨毯爆撃任務を行い、何トンもの通常爆薬を投下しました。新しい電子機器やミサイルで常にアップグレードできる能力のおかげで、冷戦終結から21世紀に至るまで、重要な戦力であり続けています。
