Visualising Superiority: Tank Design and Modern Warfare
Creative responses and research projects
An Art and Design lesson exploring how the visual identity of military hardware, specifically the M1 Abrams tank, influenced the outcome of the Battle of 73 Easting.

Content note
The lesson discusses military conflict and the use of weaponry. Teachers should remain sensitive to the human reality of the Gulf War, focusing on the design and technological aspects rather than the glorification of violence.
Overview
An Art and Design lesson exploring how the visual identity of military hardware, specifically the M1 Abrams tank, influenced the outcome of the Battle of 73 Easting.
Learning objectives
- Understand the impact of technical design on military performance.
- Analyse the visual 'language' of military machinery during the Gulf War.
- Produce a concept sketch illustrating the features that provided a tactical advantage in desert warfare.
Materials required
- Internet access to https://10secondwarstories.online/en/gulf/battle-of-73-easting
- Sketchbook or A4 paper
- Pencils, fineliners, and shading materials
- Reference images of 1990s military technology
Historical context
The Battle of 73 Easting (1991) was a decisive clash during the Gulf War. The US M1 Abrams tank demonstrated a significant technological advantage over Iraqi T-72 tanks, largely due to thermal imaging, superior armour, and stabilised fire-control systems. This shift in design allowed the US to engage effectively in poor visibility conditions, such as sandstorms.

Discussion questions
- How does the shape and design of a machine influence our perception of its power?
- Why might a designer prioritise technical function over aesthetics in military hardware?
- Does the 'sleek' appearance of modern machinery hide the human cost of its use?
Extension task
Research the 'dazzle camouflage' of WWI and compare it to the 'sand-toned' design of the Gulf War era tanks. Create a comparison poster showing how camouflage design has evolved.
Support prompts
- Think about the lines and angles of the tank—do they look aggressive or defensive?
- Consider the perspective: if you are inside the tank, what are the most important design elements for you to see?
- Compare the silhouette of the Abrams to a car you see in real life.
