  • Apply visual communication techniques to create a historical commemorative poster.
  • Evaluate the impact of national iconography in representing military struggle.

Materials required

  • Internet access to https://10secondwarstories.online/en/ww2/thai-airmen-fight-japan

Historical context

On December 8, 1941, Japan launched an invasion of Thailand. Although the Thai government eventually reached an agreement to allow Japanese troops transit to attack British Malaya, Thai military units, including the Royal Thai Air Force, initially engaged in fierce resistance. This brief conflict represents a complex moment of national survival under immense geopolitical pressure.

In the early hours of December 8, 1941, the sky over Thailand became a theatre of war. Thai airmen, flying limited resources against a superior force, attempted to defend their sovereignty. In art and history, we study how these events are remembered. Visual symbols, like the national flag or the silhouette of an aircraft, are used to communicate bravery, sacrifice, and the identity of a nation in peril.

Student worksheet (preview)

Activity: Visualizing History. 1. Watch the video clip and note three visual elements used (e.g., colours, maps, symbols). 2. Choose a specific moment from the story (e.g., the scramble of the pilots or the defence of the base). 3. Sketch a design for a poster that commemorates this event. Your poster must include: A central focal point, a bold headline, and a limited colour palette that reflects the mood of the event. Write a 50-word explanation of why you chose these specific visual elements. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Discussion questions

  1. How does the fast pace of the 10-second video change the way we perceive historical events?
  2. What symbols would you use to represent 'defiance' in a poster without using weapons or combat?
  3. Why is it important to consider the human cost when designing memorials or historical posters?
  4. How does the choice of colour palette impact the emotional message of a wartime design?

Extension task

Research the visual style of World War II propaganda posters from different nations. Create a comparison chart showing how different countries used fonts and imagery to influence public opinion.

Support prompts

  • Focus on one primary shape, such as a cloud or a wing, to tell the story of the airmen.
  • Use high-contrast colours to draw the viewer's eye to the most important part of your design.
  • Think about how the shape of the aircraft can be simplified into a basic geometric form.
