Overview
A 30-minute geography lesson analysing the spatial and human impact of the 1991 Dhahran Scud missile attack during the Gulf War.
Learning objectives
- Identify the geographic location of the Dhahran attack and its strategic significance.
- Explain the role of missile technology in modern urban warfare.
- Assess the human and environmental impacts of precision-guided versus ballistic warfare.
- Evaluate the relationship between military logistics and civilian population centres.
Materials required

Historical context
The 1991 Scud attack occurred during the Gulf War. Iraq fired a Scud missile at a barracks in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, which was housing US soldiers. The failure of the Patriot missile defence system to intercept the incoming projectile resulted in 28 deaths. It remains a case study in military defensive failure and the vulnerability of military infrastructure located near urban populations.

Discussion questions
- Why does the location of military bases in or near cities increase the risk to non-combatants?
- How does modern technology, like the Patriot missile system, change how we perceive 'safe' geography?
- What are the long-term impacts of military attacks on the local infrastructure of a neutral or allied host country?
Extension task
Research the 'Patriot Missile' defensive system. Write a short paragraph explaining why it failed to protect Dhahran in 1991 and how this influenced future missile defence designs.
Support prompts
- Consider the distance of Dhahran from the Iraq border.
- Think about how the term 'logistics' refers to the movement of troops.
- Reflect on how modern warfare changes the definition of a 'front line'.
