Overview

A 30-minute geography lesson exploring how high-altitude terrain and isolation influenced the strategic importance and vulnerability of the secret radar base at Lima Site 85 during the Vietnam War.

Learning objectives

  • Identify the geographical advantages and disadvantages of mountain-top installations.
  • Understand the impact of extreme altitude and remote terrain on military logistics.
  • Analyse how human geography and location impact the security of sensitive technology.

Materials required

  • Internet access to https://10secondwarstories.online/en/vietnam/battle-of-lima-site-85
  • Printed student worksheets
  • World maps or atlases showing Southeast Asia
  • Pens and pencils

Historical context

Lima Site 85 was a secret TACAN (Tactical Air Navigation) radar station located on Phou Pha Thi mountain in Laos. At 1,700 metres, it provided crucial all-weather bombing guidance for US aircraft over North Vietnam. Its extreme, rugged location made it both an essential asset for visibility and a vulnerable target for ground assault, leading to a surprise attack by North Vietnamese forces in March 1968.

Reading material

The Battle of Lima Site 85 is a case study in how geography dictates military capability. In the late 1960s, the US military needed a way to guide bombers through the cloud cover of Southeast Asia. They chose a mountain peak, Phou Pha Thi in Laos, for its immense elevation. Watch the short video here: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/-W6kBifSRl4. You can read more about the tactical situation at this link: https://10secondwarstories.online/en/vietnam/battle-of-lima-site-85. The location offered a 'line of sight' advantage but created a 'geographical trap.' Being perched on a cliff-face meant that supply lines were limited to air drops, and the terrain prevented traditional defensive fortifications. This isolation eventually proved fatal during the March 1968 attack.

Student worksheet (preview)

Task 1: Watch the video provided and write three sentences describing why the mountain was chosen for the radar site. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Task 2: On a separate sheet, sketch a profile view of Phou Pha Thi mountain. Label where the radar equipment was likely placed and identify one reason why the mountain's height made it difficult to defend. Task 3 : List two geographical risks faced by the soldiers stationed at the site. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Discussion questions

  1. How does the height of the mountain act as both an advantage for radar and a disadvantage for physical protection?
  2. If you were a military planner, what geographical features would you look for in a radar site that are safer than a remote mountain peak?
  3. How does the physical isolation of the site change the way reinforcements can be sent during an emergency?

Extension task

Research a modern-day remote radar or weather station. Write a short paragraph comparing the supply chain challenges of that location to those faced at Lima Site 85.

Support prompts

  • Think about the climate in Southeast Asia—how might clouds affect the need for radar?
  • If you are stuck on the map, look at the elevation map of Laos to understand why Phou Pha Thi is significant.
  • Consider the difference between 'line of sight' (seeing the target) and 'physical reach' (being able to fight back).
