Historical context
The Battle of Ia Drang (November 1965) was the first large-scale conflict between US regular troops and the People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN). It demonstrated the effectiveness of US helicopter-borne air mobility tactics, but also revealed the tenacity of the PAVN forces. It set the pattern for the 'search and destroy' strategy used throughout the war, often resulting in high attrition rates.

Discussion questions
- Why might a 10-second video be an effective way to introduce a historical topic, and what are its limitations?
- How does the use of helicopters change the nature of a battlefield compared to previous wars like WWII?
- Why is it important to consider the perspective of both sides in a conflict when studying historical battles?
Extension task
Write a short diary entry from the perspective of a soldier, either American or North Vietnamese, reflecting on the environment of the Ia Drang Valley before the fighting began.
Support prompts
- Think about the geography of Vietnam—why would thick jungles make helicopters essential?
- Consider the difference between a 'total war' where the goal is to occupy land, versus a war of attrition.
- If you are stuck on the summary, focus on the 'Who, When, and Where'.
