History
The Pingat Perkhidmatan Am was instituted on July 29, 1960, by the Malaysian government. It was intended as a workhorse medal to recognize soldiers and support personnel who served in official security zones.
In the 1960s, troops fighting against communist units or protecting the nation during border skirmishes received this award. It ensured that ordinary soldiers doing hard patrol work received proper government recognition.
As Malaysia began taking part in international peacekeeping, the criteria expanded to include various general operations and border protection tasks across both East and West Malaysia.
