History
The Cuban government created the Order of Playa Girón on April 19, 1961. It was founded right after Cuba fought off the CIA-backed invasion at the Bay of Pigs, which Cubans call Playa Girón.
For nearly two decades, it served as the highest military award in the country before the Hero of the Republic title was made in 1979. It was designed to show defiance and bravery against outside attacks.
The very first person to receive the award was Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin in July 1961. Since then, it has been awarded to brave Cuban soldiers and important foreign allies.
