History
The Order of Máximo Gómez was founded on December 10, 1979, by Cuba's Council of State. It was named after General Máximo Gómez, the chief military commander of the Cuban War of Independence.
This order has two classes and was designed specifically for senior commanders. It recognizes generals and strategists who successfully plan and direct large military campaigns.
It became an important award during Cuba's foreign military campaigns in the late twentieth century. Senior generals returning from campaigns in Africa were awarded the medal for their strategic success.
