History

The Military Recognition Medal was created in 2006 to recognize individual acts of initiative and professional excellence. The Austrian defense ministry needed a flexible award between basic service medals and the very rare Military Merit Decoration.

This decoration is presented to soldiers of all ranks who complete special tasks beyond normal duties, such as technical innovations, life-saving actions, or outstanding troop instruction. It highlights practical skill, bravery, and personal integrity.

Since its founding, it has become an important tool to encourage high performance in modern peacekeeping and civil protection units. It can be awarded to individuals as well as entire small military teams.
