History
The Military Merit Cross was established by Emperor Franz Joseph I in 1849. It was initially designed to recognize military officers who showed daring courage and smart decision-making during wartime actions.
During World War I, the decoration was organized into three classes to reward different levels of command and battlefield courage. Awards given for combat gallantry were decorated with the famous green and white striped War Ribbon and crossed laurel wreaths known as the War Decoration.
By 1918, the cross was one of the most respected decorations worn by Austrian commanders and front-line officers. While retired after 1918, its distinctive red-and-white Maltese cross design inspired many modern Austrian honors.
