History
The Gold Star Order was created on June 6, 1947, by the government of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam under President Ho Chi Minh. It was made to celebrate individuals who showed extraordinary dedication to the nation, whether on the battlefield or in building the government.
Over the decades, the award survived through the First Indochina War and the Vietnam War. Following the reunification of North and South Vietnam in 1976, it remained the premier honour of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
Today, the award is given sparingly by the National Assembly to senior leaders, prominent military commanders, and foreign heads of state who provide exceptional contributions to Vietnam.
