History
The Defence Medal for Bravery was established in 1995 by the Chief of Defence of Denmark. As Denmark began sending more soldiers into dangerous overseas peacekeeping and combat missions during the 1990s, military leaders wanted a formal medal to reward great bravery.
For many years, this was Denmark's premier award for courage in action. It recognized soldiers, sailors, and air personnel who showed fearless behavior in situations where they faced real danger of death or severe injury.
When the Valour Cross was introduced in 2011 to serve as the absolute highest gallantry award, the Defence Medal for Bravery became the second-highest award for courage in Danish service. It continues to be actively awarded today.
