History
The Somali National Army was formed when Somalia gained independence in 1960. In the 1970s, Somalia built a large army with help from the Soviet Union. The army had tanks, aircraft, and modern weapons. In 1977, Somalia invaded the Ogaden region of Ethiopia, starting the Ogaden War. The Somali National Army initially did well, capturing much of the Ogaden region. But Ethiopia, also supported by the Soviet Union and Cuba, fought back with a larger force. Cuban troops and Soviet advisers helped Ethiopia push the Somali army out of the Ogaden. By 1978, Somalia had lost the war and its army was weakened. After the war, Somalia's government collapsed and the country fell into civil war in the 1990s. The Somali National Army was rebuilt in the 2000s with international help.
