History
The Romanian Air Force started long before the war began, but it grew a lot during the 1930s. They bought planes from many different countries to build up their strength. When the war in Europe started, Romania chose to fight alongside Germany against the Soviet Union. This meant their pilots had to fly many missions over big, snowy lands. The pilots were known for being brave even when they did not have the newest technology. They flew many missions to protect supply trains and help ground troops. As the war continued, the situation for Romania got worse. They were eventually pushed back as the Soviet army moved toward their borders. In 1944, Romania changed sides and joined the Allies to help fight against Germany. This was a very difficult time for their pilots who had to fly against their former friends. After the war, the air force was reorganized under a new government. It stayed a key part of the military, eventually becoming the force that exists in Romania today. They learned many lessons from the hard fighting during the global conflict.
