History
During World War II, the United States Marines needed a way to send secret messages that the enemy could not understand. A group of Navajo men created a special code based on their complex language.
The Code Talkers served in the Pacific theater. They worked in dangerous conditions to make sure American commanders could communicate quickly and safely. Their work helped the military win important battles.
After the war, the Code Talkers kept their work a secret for many years. Because their language was spoken by so few people outside their community, it was the perfect tool for hiding messages from the enemy.
Today, the Navajo Code Talkers are remembered as heroes who used their culture to help save many lives. They proved that using different languages and unique skills can be a great strength in times of war.
