History
NATO stands for North Atlantic Treaty Organization. It started in 1949 after World War II ended. Several countries in North America and Europe decided to form a team. The main idea was that if one country was attacked, all the other members would help defend them. This helped keep the peace during a tense time known as the Cold War.
During the Cold War, NATO kept a close watch on the Soviet Union and its partners. Member countries trained together and shared military equipment to make sure they were ready for any trouble. They wanted to make sure that no single country could take over others by force. It was a very important group for balancing power in the world.
Even after the Cold War ended, NATO continued to grow. More countries joined because they wanted to be part of the group for protection and cooperation. Today, NATO still works on keeping members safe and helps with peacekeeping missions around the world. It remains one of the largest and most well-known alliances in history.
