History
The word Montagnard means mountain people in French. These groups lived in the high plateaus of central Vietnam. For many years, they lived apart from the people in the lowlands and kept their own traditions and languages alive. When the Vietnam War came to their homes, the Montagnards were caught in the middle. Many decided to help the United States because they wanted to protect their land and their families. They were known for being excellent at tracking and surviving in the wild. US Special Forces soldiers worked very closely with the Montagnard fighters. They fought together in many difficult battles in the rugged mountains. The Montagnards were brave and loyal, and they helped save many American lives during the conflict. After the war ended, many Montagnards faced danger and had to move to other countries like the United States. They are still remembered as heroes by many veterans who served with them. Their contribution was vital to the efforts made in the central highlands during the long conflict.
