History
The 32nd Army was created in 1944 specifically to defend the island of Okinawa. Japan knew the Allies were coming closer, so they built strong defenses. This army was made of many soldiers who were ready to fight to the end.
When the Americans landed on Okinawa in 1945, the 32nd Army used the geography to hide and fight back. They stayed in caves and underground tunnels. They caused many problems for the invading forces and made the battle last much longer than expected.
As the battle went on, the 32nd Army lost most of its power and soldiers. Their leader chose to end his life instead of surrendering. The army essentially stopped existing when the battle for Okinawa ended. Their actions remain a well-known example of defensive fighting in the Pacific war.
