History
HTMS Thonburi was a tough little warship built for the Thai Navy in Japan. It was designed to stay close to the coast and protect the shallow waters near Thailand. With its big guns, it was a very strong ship for its size. It became a source of pride for the Thai people because it showed they had a modern navy. The ship is most famous for its fight during the Franco-Thai War. In 1941, it faced off against French ships at the Battle of Koh Chang. The Thonburi fought very bravely even though the French ships were attacking hard. It took some heavy hits but kept fighting until it was forced to run aground to save the crew. After the battle, the ship was repaired and continued to serve for a few more years. Its story became a legend in Thailand, told to show the bravery of the sailors. Today, the memory of this ship and its crew is still celebrated at a special monument. It represents a time when the Thai Navy stood up to protect its land during a very difficult war.
