History
The Gestapo was created to find and stop anyone who did not agree with the Nazi government. They worked in secret to spy on citizens. If someone spoke out against the leaders, the Gestapo would arrest them.
They had the power to send people to prison camps without a trial. Because of this, the people of Germany were very afraid of them. The group grew very large as the Nazis took more control of the country.
During the war, the Gestapo worked in countries that Germany invaded. They helped round up people and keep order for the Nazis. After Germany lost the war, the group was officially disbanded and many members were arrested for their crimes.
