History
The German 2nd Army was a key part of the German military effort at the start of the war. It was formed to carry out the famous Schlieffen Plan, which aimed for a quick victory in the west. This force was heavily involved in the march through neutral Belgium.
As the war turned into a long struggle in the trenches, the 2nd Army stayed in important positions on the Western Front. It was tasked with holding back Allied attacks and protecting German lines. Its soldiers experienced some of the bloodiest fighting of the entire conflict.
Throughout the war, the 2nd Army underwent many changes in leadership and troop numbers. By the time the armistice arrived in 1918, the army had participated in several major defensive battles. After the war, the German military structure was limited by the peace treaties, and the unit was officially dissolved.
