What was the German 15th Army?

The 15th Army was a large group of German soldiers stationed in France during World War II. It was one of the primary fighting forces meant to keep control of the northern coast. These soldiers built many defensive walls and bunkers to stop an enemy landing.

When was this army created and what was its job?

The 15th Army was formed in 1941 to protect the French coastline from enemy attacks. Its most important job was to guard the area called Pas-de-Calais. Germany chose this spot because it was the closest point to England, making it a very likely place for an invasion.

What major event involved the 15th Army?

They were involved in the defense of France during the D-Day invasion by the Allied forces in June 1944. The German leaders were so sure the attack would happen at Pas-de-Calais that they kept the 15th Army waiting there for days. Because of this mistake, the soldiers stayed in the wrong place while the main battle happened elsewhere in Normandy.

What is a notable fact about the 15th Army?

Germany kept many of their best soldiers and supplies in this unit. They were tricked by Allied spies who made them believe a fake invasion was coming to Pas-de-Calais. This meant the 15th Army was not available to help stop the real attack at Normandy when it began.

What is the historical legacy of the 15th Army?

The 15th Army was eventually forced to retreat and was dissolved in 1945 at the end of the war. Its history shows how easily even a strong army can be fooled by clever tricks. It serves as a lesson about the importance of knowing where a real threat is coming from during a war.
