History
The Darwin Ground Forces were soldiers gathered to protect the northern part of Australia. When the war started to spread, leaders worried that enemy forces might land on the beach near Darwin. Thousands of soldiers were sent there to build camps and set up guns. They dug trenches and waited for an attack that everyone feared would come. Life in the hot sun was very hard for these men. They practiced shooting and moving quickly to spots where an enemy might land. Even though a full land invasion never happened, the soldiers still had to deal with many air raids. They helped fix the city after bombs fell and kept a close watch on the coastline. Their presence made the people living nearby feel a little bit safer during a time of great fear. Once the risk of attack went down, the size of the forces was reduced. These soldiers played a key role in keeping northern Australia secure during the peak of the war. They proved that even if a big battle did not happen, being ready was still very important.
