History
The Cuban Revolutionary Armed Forces were created after Fidel Castro's revolution in 1959. Cuba built a large, well-trained army with help from the Soviet Union. During the Cold War, Cuba sent troops to support communist governments and movements in Africa and Latin America. In 1975, Cuba sent troops to Angola to support the communist government against rebel groups. In 1977-1978, Cuban troops fought alongside the Ethiopian Army in the Ogaden War against Somalia. In 1967, Cuba supported a small group of fighters who landed in Venezuela to start a revolution, but the mission failed. Cuba also supported governments in Nicaragua, Grenada, and other countries. The Cuban military was one of the largest in the developing world during the Cold War. After the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, Cuba reduced its military size and stopped sending troops abroad.
