History
The Australian 8th Division was a key part of the military effort in the Pacific. It was created in 1940 as the war grew bigger. Many of the soldiers in this group came from Australia and were sent to help defend different areas. They were sent to places like Malaya and Singapore. The soldiers faced very tough conditions in the jungle and on the islands. They fought against the forces of Japan with great courage during several battles. Despite their best efforts, many of the soldiers were eventually captured when the forces in Singapore had to surrender. Many spent the rest of the war as prisoners in very difficult camps. Those who were not captured continued to train and serve in other parts of the war. The division is remembered for the sacrifice and bravery of its soldiers during a dark time. Their story is a part of Australian history that is honored every year. They showed that even when things looked bad, they stood by their fellow soldiers. The division was eventually reformed after the war and stayed active for some time.
