History
The Army of the Republic of Vietnam, often called the ARVN, was formed in 1955 to protect the new nation of South Vietnam. The government wanted a strong force to stop North Vietnam from taking over. Many soldiers were trained by the United States to use Western weapons and tactics. Throughout the 1960s, the ARVN worked closely with American troops to stop communist fighters. They took part in many battles in the jungles and small villages across the south. The soldiers often had to guard their own towns from enemy attacks while fighting in larger battles. It was a very difficult time, and the army faced many challenges, including low supplies and changing leadership. Despite these problems, the ARVN fought in many major engagements against the North. As the United States left the war, the ARVN had to take on the full responsibility of defending the south on their own. They continued to fight until the very end of the war in 1975. After the North took control, the army was dissolved. Its history is tied closely to the intense years of the conflict in the region.
