History
The Argentine Air Force, or Fuerza Aérea Argentina, was founded in 1945. By 1982 it was a modern force with well-trained pilots. When the Falklands War began, its pilots flew daring missions against the British fleet. French-built Super Étendard jets fired Exocet missiles that sank the destroyer HMS Sheffield and the transport ship Atlantic Conveyor. A-4 Skyhawk pilots flew long missions from the mainland, skimmed low over the water to avoid radar, and bombed British ships in San Carlos Water. The pilots showed great courage, but they faced big problems: their planes could only reach the islands from distant bases, and many had to fight without enough fuel to return safely. Argentina lost many aircraft and pilots. Even so, their attacks damaged or sank more than a dozen British ships, making the war at sea far riskier than Britain expected.
