History
The Afghan National Army was created in 2002 to serve as the main army of the new Afghan state. Soldiers were recruited from all over the country and trained by instructors from the United States and other partner nations.
Over twenty years, the army grew to about 180,000 soldiers. It fought in many battles against the Taliban and other armed groups, mostly in the southern and eastern provinces. Soldiers also helped during floods, avalanches, and other emergencies.
In August 2021, as the Taliban advanced across the country, the army's units surrendered or retreated, and the force dissolved when the government fell.
