History
The Afghan Air Force was created in 1924 by King Amanullah Khan, soon after Afghanistan won its independence. It was one of the first air forces in Asia, starting with a small number of old biplanes.
During the Cold War, the air force grew quickly with Soviet aircraft, including jets, bombers, and helicopters. It took part in the war against the mujahideen in the 1980s, but lost many aircraft to shoulder-fired missiles and raids on its bases.
After 2001, the air force was rebuilt with NATO support. It focused on helicopters and light attack planes, flying supplies, moving wounded soldiers, and backing up ground troops. The force dissolved in August 2021 when the government fell.
