History
The Abwehr was the group responsible for spying on other countries. Its job was to find out enemy secrets before battles happened. They sent agents to different countries to collect information and report it back to Germany.
Throughout the war, the Abwehr struggled to provide good information. They often had trouble getting accurate data about the Allies. Eventually, other groups in the German government began to mistrust the Abwehr.
Some members of the Abwehr were also involved in secret plots to remove Hitler from power. Because of this, the group was broken up near the end of the war. Its tasks were moved to other departments under the control of the SS.
