History

The 603rd Camouflage Engineers were made up of talented artists and soldiers. They joined the army to help win the war through clever illusions. They spent their time painting and building life-size models of heavy weapons. These fake weapons looked very real from a distance or from an airplane. They often set up their displays at night to surprise the enemy the next morning. Their work allowed real units to move safely without being spotted. Many of these soldiers returned to art careers after the war.
