History

The 308th Infantry Regiment was part of the 77th Division during the Great War. It was famous for having soldiers from many different immigrant families who lived in New York. The unit went to France to help end the war. They fought in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, which was one of the biggest battles in American history. The land was very rough and filled with trees, making it hard to see the enemy. During one part of the fight, a group of soldiers from the 308th was surrounded by the enemy in the forest. They stayed in their position for days without enough food or water, but they refused to surrender. They used pigeons to send messages for help. When they were finally rescued, the story of their bravery became famous all across America. They became known as the 'Lost Battalion.' Their story showed the world the true meaning of duty and strength. The regiment performed many other important tasks before the war ended in 1918. They helped make sure the front lines remained safe for the other troops behind them.
