History

The 101st SS Heavy Panzer Battalion was formed in 1943. It was part of the Waffen-SS and equipped with the large and heavy Tiger tanks. These tanks were designed to have thick armor and very big guns. The unit was meant to be a special force that could punch holes through enemy lines.

When the Allies landed in Normandy in June 1944, the battalion was sent to fight them. They engaged in many fierce battles against British and American forces. The unit relied on the strength of their tanks, but they faced constant attacks from Allied planes and artillery. They suffered heavy losses during the fighting in France.

As the war turned against Germany, the unit was reorganized and renamed. They continued to fight in retreats and defensive battles until the very end of the war in 1945. Most of their equipment was destroyed or abandoned as the German military collapsed. Today, they are studied by historians for their use of heavy tanks in defensive combat.
