History
Unlike earlier Chinese armored vehicles that were copied directly from Soviet equipment, the Type 63 was an indigenous design developed in China in the late 1950s and 1960s. The military wanted a light, tracked transport that could travel over rough ground and swim across rivers.
The vehicle protected troops inside from bullets and artillery shrapnel as they moved toward the front line. It carried an entire infantry squad and had a heavy machine gun mounted on top for defense. During the Vietnam War, China sent large numbers of Type 63 transports to aid North Vietnamese units fighting through marshy delta and jungle terrain. It remained in service through the end of the Cold War.
