History
In the 1950s, the Soviet Union shared military designs and machinery with China. One major result was the Type 56 assault rifle, an exact copy of the Soviet AK-47. It featured an attached folding spike bayonet, which made it easy to recognize compared to other models.
The rifle was extremely reliable, simple to clean, and could keep shooting in mud, dust, and rain. China produced millions of these firearms for its own troops and exported them around the world. During the Vietnam War, vast quantities were sent south to arm North Vietnamese forces. It became one of the most widely used infantry weapons of the Cold War.
