History
During the Cold War, the People's Liberation Army Navy focused heavily on defending China's long coastline against hostile navies. In the 1960s, Chinese shipyards designed and built the Type 037, known by Western observers as the Hainan-class submarine chaser. It was intended to replace older Soviet patrol boats.
These small warships were fast, nimble, and armed with depth charges, rocket launchers, and automatic cannons. They were designed to detect enemy submarines hiding underwater and protect vital harbors. During the Cold War, Type 037 patrol vessels guarded Chinese maritime boundaries and took part in naval skirmishes in the South China Sea. Over one hundred were built, making them common sights in Asian waters.
